Together in Tasmania to Light the World

Members of the Rosny Ward (congregation) in Hobart have embraced the Christmas “Light the World” invitation of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to focus on service this season by giving as Christ gave through their time, love and resources.

For the 5th consecutive year, children and teenagers joined together to sing Christmas carols to residents of the Queen Victoria Home, an aged-care facility. After singing many traditional carols and some popular Christmas favourites, the children gave handmade cards to those at the nursing home and to staff during their visit. The cards had been lovingly made by women of the congregation and signed by the children.

Members of the Relief Society (women’s organisation) collected toiletries, personal items and even gave their own handbags to benefit homeless women. They gathered at the chapel to complete over 48 bags of donated items.

At a recent building clean-up day, several young women asked those attending to donate non-perishable food for the Hobart Ronald McDonald House. The food helps to reduce costs for families whose children are receiving care at a local hospital.

A Light the World display in the foyer of the Rosny chapel helps to give individuals and families ideas on how they can contribute in their own homes and in their communities. Light the World has become a focus for family decisions in how to best lift others and celebrate Christmas through service.

Bron Williams remarked, “I love the Light the World initiative! We enjoy gathering as a family to discuss ways we can implement suggested ideas or our own. Our perspective changes as we focus more on Christ and what kinds of service we can offer this December. We even share ideas through social media.”

All of these combined efforts of families and individuals to “Light the World” and to give as Christ gave have already helped to brighten the lives of community members in Hobart.
