Remembering our Neighbours in Need

In a selfless act of service leading into the Christmas season, as well as a fitting tribute to Remembrance Day, the youth in Sydney's Richmond Ward (congregation) of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints gathered after church meetings to assemble backpacks for distribution to the homeless in their local community.

During the week the youth and their leaders shopped for items to include in the backpacks. Each backpack was filled with a blanket, socks, cap, water bottle, food and drinks, as well as a pen and notepad, toiletries, and a handwritten letter. Funds to purchase the backpacks were raised by the youth themselves who ran a car wash earlier in the year.

After filling the backpacks, the youth headed out with their leaders to distribute the packs in person to fifteen homeless people in the Hawkesbury area, who either live in the bush in tents, under bridges or in their vehicles. Bishop Chris Foster indicated that the ward has been performing this service for a couple of years. After talking with locals, the packs were given to people identified as having the greatest need.

Bishop Foster commented, "Today the youth and leaders were truly disciples of our Saviour. Lives were changed, friendships and testimonies strengthened as those that gave and those that received the packs shared stories together, shed tears, as well as exchanged hugs which made this an overwhelming and moving experience for all involved. It has given us a greater resolve to continue to reach out to those in need. I was so proud of our young men and young women ... the respect and love shown by these amazing youth and leaders."

The youth humbly recognised that there are many more needing help in the local community and committed to try even harder next year. The day closed with a memorable meeting where the youth shared their feelings about what they had experienced.
