Making the Most of Family History Opportunities

Each year members of the Victor Harbor Branch (congregation) of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints south of Adelaide invite their community to a Trunk ‘n Treat.

This year’s event included an opportunity to seek out one’s kindred dead with the setup of a Family History booth.

Armed with a laptop and surrounded by “tombstones” with funny inscriptions, Michael Thornton, the local family history consultant enjoyed many conversations about the Family Search website (familysearch.org).

He said, “Family Search provides many wonderful resources and if you make a start, it can lead to discovering lost ancestors.”

The extent and depth of this website, all provided as a service to the community without cost, caused many to marvel at the immensity of the undertaking.

Michael Thornton added, “This all goes to show that every opportunity is a good opportunity to talk about the world’s greatest hobby and how to use the world’s largest free genealogical web site.”

“We are all looking to know where we came from and what we can do with this information. Unlike the inscription on one tombstone for ‘Chris P Bacon, 1842-1883', we don’t need to become frazzled doing it!”
