Latter-day Saints and Anglicans Recognize Western Australian Mayors for Service to Families

Leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the Anglican Church recognized two Western Australian mayors for their service to families and communities at a special devotional meeting in Perth recently.

Wanneroo Mayor Tracey Roberts and Joondalup Mayor Troy Pickard both received the “Family Values Award” on Sunday 6 July 2014.

The awards were presented during a devotional service held at the Latter-day Saint Merriwa Chapel in Perth, Western Australia.  More than 900 members and guests of the Church were in attendance to celebrate the event.

The Reverend John Taylor of Yanchep and the Reverend Gill Rookyard of Woodvale and Kingsley, both of the Anglican Church, were invited to read the citations.

Latter-day Saint leader, Elder Peter Meurs, gave the keynote address at the meeting.  He said, “The Family Values Award originated in Perth in 1995 and has since been adopted by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints worldwide.”

The Family Values Award recognizes leaders and members of the community who help make a difference in strengthening families and promoting traditional family values.  Both mayors have dedicated much of their lives to community service.

Millions of Latter-day Saints across the world participate in a weekly family night, called, Family Home Evening.  The aims of this weekly gathering are to strengthen family relationships; plan upcoming activities; learn the gospel of Jesus Christ; and to have fun together.

Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints believe the family is ordained of God and family relationships can endure beyond death.

In 1995 Latter-day Saint leaders issued a statement titled, “The Family: A Proclamation to the World.” It contains an outline of Mormon beliefs regarding marriage and families.
