Humanitarian Award Presented to Salvation Army

The Salvation Army was honoured Sunday 7th April with a Humanitarian Award from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for the contributions of Christine Walker and others to the Huon Valley community at a special presentation held in Glen Huon, Tasmania.

The Humanitarian Award given by the Church acknowledges those organisations or individuals who have given outstanding service that benefits the disadvantaged in a community.

Glen Huon local Lauren Watson nominated the Salvation Army for the award after becoming aware of Christine’s volunteer work as a counselor to the vulnerable, including the drop-in centre service she runs for the Salvation Army Huonville every Thursday.

The drop-in centre through the Salvation Army provides food, meals, and information about community services for those disadvantaged or in need.

Christine who accepted the award in behalf of the Salvation Army shared, “When we work together and not separately, we can achieve so much more.”

President Phil Smith of the Hobart Stake (diocese) of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints organised a freezer to be donated to the Salvation Army Huonville Hall as part of the award. The freezer will help store frozen meal donations.

President Smith expressed his gratitude to the Salvation Army saying, “Thank you for allowing us the opportunity to serve you and to support the work that you do.”

Major Steve and Linda Miller of the Salvation Army Kingsborough-Huon Corps were in attendance and thanked those who volunteer at the drop-in centre. They presented a certificate of appreciation to Church missionaries Elder Robert and Sister Rosslyn Goddard for their contributions at the centre and for their help during the recent Tasmanian fires.

In addition to the presentation of the award, the event provided opportunity for volunteers from the Salvation Army, community members and those from the Church who have worked side by side in providing help, to come together in mutual respect and friendship.

“It was heart-warming to acknowledge the service being rendered in our community by the volunteers of the Salvation Army and others,” observed Sue Smith.

Laura Watson summarised the awards evening and the benefits of community involvement. “You just all work together to help others. No barriers. I think that’s how it should be.”
