On Saturday, June 24, 2018, the Doncaster Ward (congregation) of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints provided over 30 volunteers who worked side-by-side with volunteers from Rotary and Friends of Blackburn Lake Sanctuary to plant a substantial number of trees at the Sanctuary. The event had been organised by John Roche of the Doncaster Ward.
It was a wet, rainy day, but fortunately at 10:00 AM when the project started, the weather gave an opportunity for a picture of the first arrivals assembling at the sanctuary in front of the kiosk. The volunteers worked for many hours in cold, damp conditions.
Doncaster Ward Bishop John Thatcher, and members of his congregation including full time missionaries came to help with the tree planting. Ward member Robert Prentice said, "It was great to be involved in the local community and do an activity that included families."
After the event, Bishop Thatcher remarked, "We had a good turnout from the ward...it was good to help out the community and talk with the other volunteers afterwards." Participant Sam Leicester also commented, "My children play in this park, it was a great opportunity to give something back...they loved getting involved and helping out."
It was a great event for all involved. The Blackburn Lake Sanctuary rangers greatly appreciated all of the hard work contributed by everyone. They were also grateful for a BBQ provided for the group afterwards by the Doncaster Ward.
