Doing Their Part to Clean Up Australia

More than 100 members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from Melton and Geelong joined with the local community to participate in the annual Clean Up Australia Day on Saturday 3rd March.

This year was the 12th consecutive year members from the Melton Ward (congregation) have participated in the event. This year’s project was in partnership with Melbourne Water and other community organisations to beautify and preserve the local area.

Sue Rogers, Communications and Engagement Advisor at Melbourne Water was impressed with the turnout.

“It’s great to see the community get together and be involved,” she said.

Local Church member David Cowan explained that caring for the environment is one way the Church gives back to the community.

“It's great working with the wider community,” remarked David. “Serving together brings us closer together.”

Other members of the local community joined with members in donning the bright yellow Mormon Helping Hands vests. The vests, worn by local volunteers and humanitarian aid workers are recognised worldwide.

Clean Up Australia Day started as a small movement 27 years ago and is now the largest community-based environmental event in the country. The event’s motto is “To inspire and work with communities to clean up, fix up and conserve our environment.”

Find out how you can get involved for next year’s event at the Clean Up Australia website.
