Faith Representatives Discuss Views on Death and Dying

In times of grief and sadness, respecting each other's beliefs can supply much needed comfort.

To foster this respect, Melbourne's Knox Interfaith Network held a forum entitled, “Faith Perspectives on Death and Dying” on Tuesday, 10 September, in which representatives from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints participated.

David Cray, from the Wantirna South Ward (congregation) of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, spoke at the event.

“We presented our belief that all people in the world are part of the family of God and that He is a perfect, loving Heavenly Father with a plan for our happiness. This life is part of His eternal plan for us to grow and experience true joy.”

In addition to the Christian perspective on death and dying presented by the church, there were presentations by the Muslim faith by ISOMER, Hindu faith by Sri Vakranthunda Vinayagar and the Buddhist faith by Pure Land Learning Centre.

Time was allotted after each faith group’s presentation for questions and answers to foster understanding between groups.

Shameela Essop, president of Knox Interfaith Network, said, "This event was a great opportunity for us to learn about different faiths' perspectives on death and dying and more importantly to become a more respectful and supportive community."

She added, “The death of a loved one is always distressing, but having the support of family, friends and the community makes a huge difference, particularly when they are understanding and respectful of your faith and traditions.”

The forum was attended by approximately 50 people from the Knox community and was supported by the Victorian Multicultural Commission (VMC) and Knox City Council.
