Power Outages, Flooding, Crops Destroyed as Cyclone Evan Hits Fiji

Since arriving in Fiji on the weekend, Cyclone Evan has caused power outages, flooding, evacuations from homes and the destruction of many crops according to Elder Taniela Wakolo, a senior leader of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Fiji.

“We are in contact with most local leaders of our church, across the country, and reports to this point are that no-one has been harmed, but property and crops have been,” he said. “Communication is not very good in the interior, and north, so we continue to endeavour to make contact with all of our local leaders.”

“Many Latter-day Saints and our neighbours are using our chapels as temporary evacuation centres.”

The rain is easing, but winds are still high and there is a high tide coming soon, which may lead to more flooding.

Latter-day Saint bishops and branch presidents (lay ministers) are assessing members’ needs, and assisting with food, water, shelter and other support.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has purchased food and other supplies, and will purchase more in the coming hours, so needy families and communities can be assisted as required.  Church leaders are in contact with government officials so Latter-day Saint efforts can be coordinated appropriately.

Latter-day Saint facilities, including the Suva Fiji Temple and chapels across the nation are in good order, with minor damage reported in some locations.

As the storm subsides, Church leaders will continue to assess how the Church, its missionaries and members can assist communities by providing relief supplies and in the clean up and recovery.
