Churches Help Host Free Car Safety Workshops

As part of the Local Government Road Safety Program, Blacktown City Council offered free car seat inspections at the Hebersham meetinghouse of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This initiative came about when Mount Druitt Police Area Command noticed a higher rate of child car seats not being installed correctly. The police department then reached out to the Blacktown City Council and local churches to work together to inform the community on car safety.

Building on the successful car safety workshop hosted by a local Samoan Church in December 2018, Mount Druitt PAC approached The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints about providing the Church's carpark space to allow the set up of a temporary facility where anyone in the community could bring their cars in order to be checked by qualified fitters. The ample space and smooth process allowed the cars to be checked within minutes.

“It was a delight for us to open our space to the community for a good cause. It was encouraging to see that most of the people who benefited from this service were not members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, but rather were families from the wider community,” commented Octavia Amituanai, director of public affairs for the Hebersham Stake (diocese).

Octavia said it was interesting to see that many cars needed just a small correction. She expressed her hope and interest that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will continue working with the local police, the Blacktown Council and other faiths in the future to promote similar meaningful community causes.
