The recent City of Whitehorse Seniors Festival featured a tour of the meetinghouse and temple grounds of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at Wantirna, Melbourne. Included as part of a “Tour of Worship” bus tour hosted by Whitehorse Interfaith Network, participants had the opportunity to learn about other faiths and to meet new people.
Held on the 24th of October 2019, seniors and other members of the local community were taken on a tour of the chapel, and temple grounds finishing with afternoon tea and an opportunity to visit and ask questions.
Having spent the morning exploring other local places of worship, participants were given insight into Church doctrines such as the Plan of Salvation, family history services and the significance of temple worship.
Robert Snow, local Church member and Temple and Family History representative welcomed attendees, sharing his experience gained through decades of service to the Church and wider community.
“Those that attended felt comfortable enough to ask questions about the chapel, what our services were like and one even asked if anyone could attend," he explained.
“There was a general interest in family history and whether the [family history centre] was open to [the community].”
These tours, organised by the local Whitehorse Interfaith Network, promote interfaith dialogue, social justice and harmony within the wider community.
Sarah Martinelli, from the City of Whitehorse presented the Church with a certificate of appreciation at the end of the tour.
