Young People from Sydney Rise to the Challenge to Seek Out Their Ancestors

Youth from Northern Sydney put aside Facebook and Twitter, choosing instead to use technology to learn about their ancestors.

Benjamin Jian, Isaac Timperley, Aidan Hill and other young people between 12 and 18 years of age worked with a local family history consultant and their church leaders at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints recently in Greenwich to collect information about their ancestors.

One purpose of this youth family history activity was to help young people develop a sense of personal connection with their ancestors. While preparing for this activity, 17-year-old Aidan Hill practiced leadership skills by providing training to others in his local congregation who had expressed an interest in learning about family history.

Isaac Timperley, who soon will be leaving to serve a full-time mission for the Church said, “It was intriguing to learn about my ancestors. Once I started searching, I did not want to stop.”

Through this activity the Greenwich congregation met the challenge to find at least 20 ancestors to enter into the worldwide site FamilySearch.
