Toowoomba Chapel Celebrates 60 Years

Sixty Years ago, on 7 July 1956 in the City of Toowoomba, Mayor Alderman MJR Anderson turned the first sod for a new Chapel for the members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  A year later, they moved into their new building. Sixty years later church members celebrated the anniversary of the Toowoomba building. Toowoomba members enjoyed an afternoon music recital in celebration of their 60th anniversary.

The celebration highlighted the original Charles Dirksen Pipe Organ, which was placed in the chapel's now recreation hall in the original design. Long-time member Stan Loach shared a history of the Organ.

Matthew Glen, master of ceremonies, spoke of the original organists who conducted the music with great enthusiasm, He shared memories of his time in Toowoomba and encouraged attendees to keep a record of their history, special events, and stories, for future generations.

 Andrew Doecke was the highlight on the Charles Dirksen Organ. He was the master working his mighty magic with his whole being. He was magnificent to both watch and listen. It was a real treat for all. Andrew's humour, as he introduced each segment lightened everyone's spirit, as he told stories from days gone by. Andrew stated later "I felt honoured to play".

Andrew Janetzki MP Toowoomba South, attended with his wife Melinda and children. Andrew mentioned he was of German Lutheran heritage, and knew Andrew Doecke well, and was aware that he played for the Lutheran's, the Presbyterians, and the Anglican's on Sundays." In my electorate there are 25 places of worship. We are a blessed city with a heart for God". He wished every God's blessing to all in the next 60 years.

Volunteer leader for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints President Aaron Thayer concluded the event paying tribute to all those who have gone before. He spoke of the 1,000's of hours to build the chapel, and the great sacrifices of time and effort to pay it off. The continuing sacrifices in the cold and long nights of cleaning and caring for the building.

He counselled all to take time to remember, "Stop regularly, stop and remember, all the sermons, the talks, the tears shed, and reflect long enough to be grateful, and to change our lives for the better."
