Latter-day Saints in Bush Fire Area Teach Community about 72 Hour Emergency Kits

On 27 June members of the Belconnen ward (congregation) of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Canberra gave a 72 hour emergency kit demonstration to interested members of the community.

The event was held to teach people in the area principles of survival in case of a natural disaster. Canberra is built within a bush and grass landscape which makes bushfires a fact of life.

Residents in the area have experienced natural disasters in the past, including bushfires, floods and earthquakes.

Alistair Coe MLA, an elected official in the Australian Capital Territory, attended and spoke at this event.

Mr. Coe commended the attendees for their faith and standards and thanked them for the influence of good they had on their community. He encouraged them in their disaster preparation, reminding all present that “life is unpredictable.”

Canberra woman, Elizabeth Kikkert, who attended the program, said, “Having a natural disaster plan and a 72 hour emergency kit helps me make important decisions before I am faced with a natural disaster.”

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints teaches principles of emergency preparedness, provident living, self-reliance and following the teachings of Jesus Christ.
