Festivities to celebrate 50 years since the dedication of the Latrobe Valley chapel of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints were held recently in Traralgon.
Built with volunteer labour from the Labour Missionary Program, the chapel stands today as a tribute to those who dedicated their time, skills and means to see its completion on 26 Sept 1964.
President Graham F. Smith of the Gippsland Stake (diocese) observed, "The evening was a wonderful expression of our appreciation for those who have dedicated themselves to establish a meeting house in which to worship Jesus Christ and Heavenly Father. "
He continues, "Families and individuals not only donated countless hours to building the Latrobe Valley chapel but also their savings to ensure that the chapel could be debt free when it was dedicated 12 months after it’s completion."
"How grateful we are for members who have given so much of their lives to the building up of the Kingdom in the last 50 years," concludes President Smith.
J. Murray Lobley who was branch (congregation) president at the time of the dedication and at the celebration noted he was confident that the Church would have a "continuing presence" in Gippsland.
