Fire Cannot Destroy School Spirit

On 9 January 2017, Queensland Fire and Emergency Services were called to a fire at the Cherbourg State School, 250km north-west of Brisbane. Thankfully no one was injured as a result of the blaze. A school building was destroyed along with all the items the classroom teacher had prepared for their students ahead of the school year commencing.

GIVIT launched an appeal to assist with replacing many of the back to school supplies such as school hats, drink bottles, whiteboard markers, school shoes, storage containers and more. Red Cross became aware of the need and immediately offered to assist.

Thanks to the generous support of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Red Cross could provide each student at Cherbourg State School with a School Kit to help them get back on their feet and start the year off well.

On 7 February 2017, Red Cross delivered 180 School Kits to Cherbourg School, where they were greeted by dozens of very energetic and excited students. The kids were eager to assist and the supplies were unloaded in record time.
